Announcing Ho‘okūkū Kīkā Kila – 1^st Annual Steel Guitar Contest

The first annual Hawaiian Steel Guitar Contest will be held on July 8, 2026, during the annual Waikīkī Steel Guitar Week. The contest will begin at noon and run through 6:30 PM, with a detailed schedule published after it has been developed. Winners will receive cash prizes.

HIMELE chairman Alan Akaka says, "I am thrilled to announce "A New Tradition," the 1^st Annual Ho‘okūkū Kīkā Kila Hawaiian Steel Guitar Contest. Mark your calendars for July 8, 2026, as we celebrate musical talent in the heart of Waikīkī Steel Guitar Week."

He continues, "We invite all amateur steel guitar players – keiki (children), adult amateurs, and kūpuna (seniors) – to join us in this wonderful journey. Exciting cash prizes await in each division, recognizing your passion and dedication."

The contest idea was conceived by Royal Hawaiian Center's Cultural Director Monte McComber. The event will be co-produced by HIMELE and the Royal Hawaiian Center. The Center will provide major support and underwriting for the event. The contest is open to players who do not currently earn more than 50% of their annual income from professional musical performances or teaching. There is no entry fee.

There will be three divisions: Keiki (15 years and younger), Open Amateur (ages 16-59), and Kūpuna (ages 60 and older). Each participant will have the opportunity to perform two songs: one of their choice and a second randomly selected from a hat prior to the competition. The contest selections will be announced in advance so that everyone can be fully prepared and ready to shine on the day of the event.

Contest applications must be received by June 1. Registration is available online. Alternately, registration forms may be downloaded, filled out, and mailed to Ke Kula Mele at the address provided.
