Maui Steel Guitar Festival Reprise

Reprise Presents Memorable Videos from Past Maui Festivals

October 22, 2023 • Addison ChingFestivals and Conventions

The Maui Steel Guitar Festival Reprise livestream broadcast on October 14 presented performance videos from past Maui Steel Guitar Festivals from 2013 through 2019.

The broadcast was made in lieu of the in-person 2023 Maui Steel Guitar Festival that was previously canceled due to the wildfire devastation of West Maui and the ongoing rebuilding effort.

The broadcast featured Maui steel guitarists Sam Ako, Ross Ka‘a‘a, Joel Katz, Konapiliahi Lau, and Geri Valdriz. Also featured were rarely seen steel guitarists Tony Locke and Combo Mahalo, Duke Kaleolani Ching and Owana Salazar who performed at the Maui festivals, performances by steel guitarists Tadashi Arakawa and Eddie Palama who have passed on, and some early videos of NextGen steel guitarists who have graduated (NextGen Alumni Alexis Tolentino and Joey Misailidis) and/or no longer perform (Keen Ching) as steel guitarists.

Japanese steel guitarists and steel guitar schools were also presented in the livestream broadcast including Tetsuya Ishiyama, Kanika Pila, Na Kanaka, Makana, Anegogumi, Yokohama Bay Breeze, Yokohama Hawaiian Music Academy, Lion Halau, and Makoto Shiraishi and the Coco Music Society.

The broadcast was also presented in memory of two of the festival videographers, Ronald Tolentino and Dr. Kris Oka, both deceased.

The two-hour broadcast is archived and available for demand viewing on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Showcase's Facebook page and YouTube channel.
