The first steel guitar workshop to be offered by the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Symposium since 2019 will be held on August 14, 2022. This event signals the return of steel guitar training symposiums that were paused due to COVID-19 restrictions on events and assemblies.
The one-day event will be held for the Northern California area at the Odd Fellows Hall in Cupertino.
The 2022 Northern California Hawaiian Steel Guitar Symposium comprises two workshops, one for beginners and one for steel guitarists who want to improve their playing.
The morning Starter Class is for people with no prior steel guitar experience. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of instrument technique and TAB reading.
The afternoon Symposium Class will focus on learning new pieces and exploring practice strategies. According to workshop instructor Alan Akaka, the Symposium Class is designed for those who "…have some experience on the steel guitar and would like to take your playing to the next level…"

The workshops will be held at the Odd Fellow Hall, site of the last Northern California Hawaiian Steel Guitar Symposium that was held in 2019. All workshop attendees must supply their own instrument, portable amplifier and music stand. Symposium Class and Kani Ka Pila participants are advised to bring a He Mele Aloha Hawaiian songbook.
