Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival at Windward Mall

Seven Steelers at Windward Mall

April 13, 2022 • Addison ChingFestivals and Conventions

The first Hawaiian steel guitar festival on O‘ahu in 2022 will be a blockbuster featuring seven Hawaiian steel guitarists. The one-day event will be held on June 11, 2022, at the Windward Mall in Kane‘ohe. The festival will coincide with the celebration of Kamehameha Day, a public holiday in the state of Hawaii. It honors Kamehameha the Great, the monarch who first established the unified Kingdom of Hawai‘i—comprising the Hawaiian Islands of Ni‘ihau, Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Molokai, Lāna‘i, Kaho‘olawe, Maui, and Hawai‘i Island.

The 4½ hour event will feature steel guitarists Alan Akaka, Jeff Au Hoy, Steve Cheney, Bobby Ingano, Kapono Lopes, Greg Sardinha, and Joseph Zayac. The steel guitarists will be backed up by Kaipo Asing on guitar and Helene Woodward on bass.

A hands-on experience with the steel guitar will be offered adjacent to the mall's center stage venue. Festival guests can learn more about the steel guitar and experience the instrument under the direction of a trained steel guitarist.

The festival will also be livestreamed on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Showcase's Facebook page and YouTube channel, and is scheduled to begin at 11:30 Hawaiian Standard Time.

The mall has published their latest COVID-19 health and safety recommendations for their mall patrons.
