Livestream Kanikapila from Molokai

Molokai Musicians Featured in February Showcase

February 2, 2022 • Addison ChingFestivals and Conventions

The February Showcase will feature several O‘ahu and Molokai all-star musicians playing kanikapila-style. The showcase will originate live from Hiro's ‘Ohana Grill restaurant at the Hotel Molokai on February 26, 2022. The showcase will begin at an earlier 1 P.M. Hawaiian Standard Time so that the restaurant's requirements can be accommodated.

The two-hour program will feature two live kanikapila segments.

The first segment will showcase Molokai musicians Victor Patron, Fred Reyes, and Sterling Kalua. This segment will provide the viewing audience with a unique perspective of a Molokai-style kanikapila

The second kanikapila segment will include Kapono Lopes and Mālie Lyman on steel guitars, Pomaika‘i Keawe on ‘ukulele, Alan Akaka on guitar, and Helene Woodward on upright bass.

Prerecorded performance videos from the NextGen steel guitarists will be shown between the live segments.

Livestream facilities will be provided by Akakū Molakai, an independent, non-profit corporation established in 1992 to promote the creation of media by, for and about the Molokai community.

This livestream showcase is one of a continuing series of monthly livestream broadcasts featuring the Hawaiian steel guitar. In addition to showcases on O‘ahu, livestream showcases have originated from Kaua‘i, Maui and Hawai‘i Island.

Funding for these showcases is provided by Hawai‘i Tourism Authority through the Kūkulu Ola Program, administered by the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. Showcases are also supported in part by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA), through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawai‘i or grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).
