May Livestream Kanikapila

April 16, 2021 • Addison ChingFestivals and Conventions

Get your instruments ready! A second Livestream Kanikapila has been scheduled for May. The two-hour kanikapila will be broadcast on Saturday, May 15 from 3PM Hawaiian Standard Time on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival's Facebook page and YouTube channel.

The event will once again feature an all-star kanikapila band. Musicians will include steel guitarists Alan Akaka, Bobby Ingano, Greg Sardinha, and Kapono Lopes, along with musicians Adam Asing, Kaipo Asing, and George Kuo.

The first Livestream Kanikapila held in March featured requests submitted by kanikapila guests in the days leading up to the kanikapila. Musical selections were taken from the He Mele Aloha Hawaiian Songbook and performed, where possible, in the published music key. Kanikapila guests were able to use their favorite instrument or instruments and sing and play along with the all-star band in the comfort of their own home.

Comments from March's all-star band indicate that the musicians enjoyed the experience just as much as the home participants did. It is rare that a group of musicians such as the all-star band gets together to play music in an informal, unrehearsed setting.

May's kanikapila selections will feature music of the band's choosing and may not necessarily reflect what's published in the He Mele Aloha songbook. However, requests may be submitted to mele@hawaiiansteelguitarfestival.com for consideration.
