City and County of Honolulu mayor Kirk Caldwell has issued a proclamation declaring July 9 - 15, 2017, to be HAWAIIAN STEEL GUITAR APPRECIATION WEEK "in appreciation of the art of Hawaiian steel guitar and the cultural heritage of our islands."
The proclamation coincides with the first annual Waikiki Steel Guitar Week that incorporates the annual Waikiki Steel Guitar Festival, now in its eighth year. The festival was first presented at Waikiki Beach Walk but was relocated to the Royal Grove Stage at the Royal Hawaiian Center last year when the Royal Hawaiian Center began its partnership with HIMELE, the event's producer. The event was expanded to the all-week format this year because the center strongly believes and supports Hawaiian culture and the Hawaiian steel guitar.
The full proclamation can be viewed here.
This proclamation is the third made by Hawai'i county mayors this year in support of the Hawaiian steel guitar and memoralizes their support and endorsement of the festivals and the Hawaiian steel guitar. Kaua'i County mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr., issued a proclamation in February for the annual Kaua'i Steel Guitar Festival, and Maui County mayor Alan M. Arakawa also issued a proclamation in April for the Maui Steel Guitar Festival.WSGFW
